Community Updates: Fri. Apr. 29th, 2022

Dear Clara Hughes Community,

With the good weather approaching we know that students will be excited again to be riding their bikes, scooters and skateboards to school.  Please feel free to lock up bikes on the black bike racks at the front of the school.  The blue racks are for scooters to be locked up.  Scooters will not be allowed in the school or classrooms as we have provided a place at the front of the school for them to be locked up.  For skateboards, if your child is going to be skateboarding to school please reach out to their classroom teacher to see if there is a safe space to store the skateboard in their classroom.  Please note that skateboarding will not be allowed on the school yard unless given permission by a teacher in which case a helmet will have to be worn according to our school guidelines.

Thank you for supporting us with your children.  We need to work together to make sure our children are safe at school.  Please remind your children of the following things;

  • We have a hands-off/feet off policy.  They should not be touching other students or their belongings
  • Use your WITS (ask your child about this)
  • If you see something, say something
  • Be kind and respectful always to peers and adults

Have a wonderful weekend!

Children’s Mental Health Week May 2-6, 2022

Mental health week is coming up on the first week of May (May 2-8, 2022). Some stress is normal, but too much stress can make it difficult for children to concentrate, learn, and get along with others. Mental health is about how we think, feel and act. When our mental health is good it helps us to get the most out of life. It is important to begin the conversation regarding mental health early; here are some ideas to get started.

Stress Busting for Kids: Three Steps to Teach Kids How to Cope with Stress

1. Awareness – Help them understand their stressor and reactions.

2. Calm Down to Think Clearly – Teach them to use exercises, journaling, art, counting to ten, breathing exercises, laughter, or hugs.

3. Make a Plan – Create a step-by-step plan to solve the problem. Social-Emotional Learning –

Tips and Tricks to Build Resilience

• Deep belly breathing – get comfortable, slowly breathe in through your nose, hold your breath for a couple seconds, and out through your mouth. Practice together any time your child seems stressed/upset.

• Gratitude moment – take a moment every day to share something you’re thankful for.

• Organizing pause – take a break from busy life to think and process emotions – organize your closet, toys, or clean your room. Think of a way to celebrate accomplishing this task. Happy dance!

• Stop, think, and go problem solving o RED means stop! Take a deep breath and talk about what the problem is. o YELLOW means think! Slow down, take some deep breaths, think and talk about possible solutions. o GREEN means go! Try out your solution.

• Stay connected – supportive relationships are the most important stress reliever for children.

• Reduce stress in your child’s environment – eating healthy food, getting enough sleep, and sticking to a morning and bedtime routine can all help children relax and manage stress. Be aware of your own stress too!

• Make time for physical activity and play – go for a walk or a bike ride, physical activity can release brain chemicals that help children feel less tense and anxious.

If your child is having trouble coping, find help by contacting your family health practitioner or Kids Help Phone. Kids Help Phone: 1-800-668-6868 or text CONNECT to 686868

Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. The day, which falls on Thursday, May 5 in 2022, is also known as Battle of Puebla Day. While it is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations.
