Community Updates for Friday, June 17th

Posted On Monday June 20, 2022

Dear Clara Hughes Community,

The weather is going to be hot for the last two weeks of school so please be reminded to send your child to school with a refillable water bottle so they can stay hydrated throughout the day.  Also, a hat to protect them from the sun is also helpful.

As we enter our last few weeks of school, we want to ensure that all students and staff can have an enjoyable last few weeks.  We are noticing that we are starting to have issues in the boy’s bathroom on the main floor.  Students are vandalizing the washrooms and writing graffiti in ink and bingo dabbers all over the boy’s washroom stalls.  Please speak to your children about the importance of respecting school property.  Our custodial staff work very hard to keep our school clean and safe for staff and students.

To ensure the safety of all students and community members, please remember to dismount from bikes and scooters while on school property, and while crossing at the crosswalk. We don’t want anyone to get hurt during morning arrival and dismissal.

Thank you for supporting us with your children.  We need to work together to make sure our children are safe at school.  Please remind your children of the following things;

  • We have a hands-off/feet off policy.  Students should not be touching other students, or their belongings please remind your children of this
  • Use your WITS (ask your child about this)
  • If you see something, say something
  • Be kind and respectful always to peers and adult

We are asking again that if you come to the back of the school to pick up your child at the end of the day, please stay on the perimeter of the school yard.  Now with the weather being so beautiful, many classes will be outside at the end of the day as a part of their learning.  Teachers will be wearing their orange vest and we are asking that you keep your strollers and younger children close to you so they do not get hurt by our students who may be playing with equipment.

Thanks again for your support in keeping our students safe and following the expected behaviors at our school.

Litha (Wicca)

Litha is a pagan holiday; one of their eight sabbats during the year. Litha (also known as Midsummer) occurs on the summer solstice, and celebrates the beginning of summer. The traditions of Litha appear to be borrowed from many cultures. Most ancient cultures celebrated the summer solstice in some way. The Celts celebrated Litha with hilltop bonfires and dancing. Many people attempted to jump over or through the bonfires for good luck.

St. Jean-Baptiste Day (Quebec)

Held annually on 24 June, the Fête nationale du Québec (formerly known as Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day) has been a statutory holiday in Québec since 1925. Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day has been celebrated in North America since the early days of New France. Originally a religious celebration, it took a more patriotic turn in 1834 with Ludger Duvernay. The first Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day parade took place in Montréal in 1843. Since 1984, the Mouvement national des Québécoises et Québécois (MNQ) has organized the festivities of the Fête nationale du Québec. Various francophone communities across Canada also celebrate Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day.
