About Us

Clara Hughes is located in Oshawa, Ontario and serves students in Kindergarten through Grade 8.

Clara Hughes Public School is a relatively new school in the central Oshawa area. In September 2012, the three school communities of Ritson Road, Duke of Edinburgh, and Harmony Road public schools amalgamated to form Clara Hughes Public School. Originally housed in the Donevan Collegiate building on Harmony Road, we are now beginning our fifth year at our new location on Taylor Street in Oshawa. In 2012, we began with 480 students and have now grown to over 700 students registered.

Mission statement

Our school vision statement is “Ignite, Celebrate, Dream”. Our logo and motto encompass the word “HEAT” to represent the Olympic flame and acknowledge the spirit of Clara Hughes and her Olympic accomplishments. On the word ‘Heat’ you see the Ojibwa word “EKWA” which Clara requested to be a part of the logo. EKWA means “NOW” which embodies the spirit of our school. Not only is this a reminder to practice mindfulness and be fully in the moment, but it also provides our staff with the moral imperative that what we do matters; our students can succeed, and NOW is the time to help them do just that.

Principal’s message

Welcome to Clara Hughes Public School!

We acknowledge and celebrate everything that our students do! Our staff has worked diligently to provide students with high yield instructional strategies and assessment practices that have equipped the students with the knowledge and skills to achieve academic success.

Along with academics, students are encouraged to participate in a variety of extra-curricular activities, such as athletics, the arts, and clubs. In addition to our staff, we have a strong group of community members that help in many areas of our school. From our Breakfast Program to our School Community Council, parents and staff members play a significant role in setting and maintaining our school goals in an inclusive, welcoming and warm environment.

All educators will continue to work together to refine and improve assessment and instructional practices through a close analysis of data to best support the needs and learning of our students.

"If you dream and you allow yourself to dream
you can do anything."
